Monday, December 20th was Reindeer Day!
A reindeer came to visit us at school.
We learned:
* Reindeer have wide hooves to help them stay on top of the snow!
* Both male and female reindeer have antlers!
* People have tamed reindeer to help them to do work!
* Reindeer live in northern lands where it is very cold.
These are the reindeer magnets that we made with some clothespins, a magnet, a tiny pom pom, glue dots and googly eyes!
Another activity we did was writing a letter to Santa trying to persuade him why we would make good reindeer.

Verbs!
We have been learning about action verbs. We went on a Verb Hunt around the school. With clipboards in hand, we roamed the halls watching to see what action we could find in our school. We found so many people doing many different things! We had to flip our papers over and add spaces on the back!
What better way to learn about action words, then to play the ultimate game of acting things out: charades. Students were each given an action verb and had to act it out for the rest of the class to guess!

Persuasive Writing
We have started a unit on Persuasive writing. First, we learned the difference between a fact and an opinion. We wrote acrostic poems using either all FACTS or all OPINIONS.
One of the students' favorite activities was a movement game. I posted a sign that said FACT on one side of the classroom and one that said OPINION on the other end. I then read a Fact and Opinion task card and the students would have to move to the sign that told what the statement was. We then discussed why the students answered the way they did. We also used the task cards to play F & O Scoot!
We have also read some books where the main character is trying to persuade someone.
Persuade Me!
After listening to the story Earrings! by Judith Viorst, students filled out the following page. I am amazed how well my students are doing with this unit! Then again, think about how seven year olds are masters of persuasion when it comes to trying to get their parents to give them what they want!
Welcome!
Welcome to my new blog! My hope is that this blog will be a way for you to join your child's journey through second grade!
